Anesthesia Options

In addition to the years of education and training beyond dental school to practice the broad scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral surgeons are also qualified to administer anesthesia. At Stephenville Oral Surgery, Dr. McPhillips offers several anesthesia options to ensure a safe and comfortable surgical experience. The type of anesthesia chosen for your procedure will be selected during your consultation appointment.

Types of Anesthesia

There are several types of anesthesia used during oral surgery. Your oral surgeon will determine the type of anesthesia you will receive in advance of your procedure. Your health history, personal preference, and type of surgery will all factor into which anesthesia option is right for you.

  • Local anesthesia provides localized numbness to the desired area, as it is administered directly into the surgical site. It works quickly to block any surgical discomfort but allows the patient to remain conscious. It is commonly used with other types of anesthesia, such as nitrous oxide.
  • Nitrous oxide is an inhaled sedative that is administered through a mask. It helps patients feel more relaxed during their procedure while remaining conscious. It is also known as laughing gas. Local anesthesia is commonly used together with nitrous oxide.
  • Intravenous (IV) sedation is administered directly into the vein for a quick and effective anesthetic option. It allows the patient to enter a sleep-like state. One of the most common side effects of IV sedation is amnesia, so most patients will not remember their procedure. IV sedation is often preferred for wisdom teeth and dental implant patients. For patients 12 years and younger, Dr. McPhillips will usually have an anesthesiologist administer anesthesia.
  • Hospital- or Surgery Center-Based General Anesthesia is typically used for extensive or complex oral surgery procedures or for patients where health status dictates the procedure would be safest performed in the hospital. This decision is usually made by collaborating with your other health care physicians.
